At some point or another, many consumers experience financial difficulty of some sort, which may mean that they can't make their short-term insurance premium payments. The danger with this is that their insurance policy will lapse and their vehicle or house will no longer be insured. With today's high accident rates and the rising incidence of house breakings, this is not a good situation to be in.
Fabian Angiers, general manager of Dial Direct Insurance, says, ?Being in an accident or being a victim of theft when you are not insured can lead to a whole new set of financial woes and can be crippling. Should you find yourself in a tight spot financially, it is advisable to make every effort to structure things so that you can continue paying your insurance. Where many consumers go wrong, is that they view insurance as a ?nice to have', when it is in fact an absolute necessity! If your car is financed or you have a bond, you are legally required to have insurance to protect the asset for which the financial institution has lent you the money.?
If a client's payment does not go through, for example a debit order is returned by the bank, the insurance company will try and debit the client's account again for the premium, approximately 15 days later. If it is returned again, the policy lapses straight away. Angiers says that it can however be reinstated immediately as soon as the client has paid the outstanding amount.
He continues, ?Apart from the risk and inconvenience associated with your payment bouncing, you will incur a cost from your bank as well, to cover the administration fees for returning the debit order and then re-debiting it later. This could be as much as R200, which is money that could be far better spent on something else!?
Dial Direct offers its clients premium waiver cover for 6 months for dread diseases and retrenchment. This means that should they not be able to pay their Dial Direct premiums as a result of being retrenched or having a dread disease their Dial Direct premiums will be covered for up to 6 months.
Angiers concludes,?If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation where you are battling to make your insurance payments, phone us and chat to us about finding a workable solution. It's far preferable to change or reduce your cover slightly, in order to make your premiums more affordable at such a time, rather than to risk having no insurance cover at all.?
